Why hire a professional photographer?
These days, everybody has a perfectly adequate camera. So it’s not surprising if you think that you could take your newborn photos yourself or have a friend or family member do it. Lets face it, most of us know someone who’s keen on photography. There is usually a significant investment of time and money involved when hiring a professional photographer and if virtually everyone you know is offering to take the pictures you want, you may be wondering why on earth you should spend time and money hiring a professional.
Here are a few reasons to invest in some time with a qualified professional photographer
A professional photographer will guarantee their results
Proud dads and excited aunts might get some lovely snaps of your little one. But maybe they won’t. Your new baby only stays in that teeny tiny newborn stage for about 10 days. After that, they’ve already grown and developed and look different. They’ll never get that look back. It is there for a very short time and then it’s gone forever. Commemorative pictures from this magical time are something you’ll long for in the years and decades to come. Do you really want to leave those precious pictures to chance? When you invest in time with a professional photographer you’re removing the element of chance and buying the reliability of consistently high-quality images – guaranteed.
A professional newborn photographer has been trained in how to pose your baby safely
Many of the most heart-breakingly cute images of newborn babies aren’t actually one image, but a composite of two or more images. This is done so that during the creation of these images your baby is never placed at risk. Trained newborn photographers know how to pose baby safely for these images, so that your baby is supported in ways that aren’t visible in the final image. They also then have the technical ability to combine these images into a fantastic end result. So don’t try this at home, folks! It’s really not worth the risk.
A professional’s artistic training means your commission will be tailored to your individual personality and your home’s décor
Can grandad or your next-door neighbour really be relied upon to assess your style and the style of your home and create a piece of art tailored perfectly to your individual requirements? When you commission a professional photographer they will often take a creative brief. There are many creative decisions to consider when creating your piece of art. The creative brief means that the photographer can make these decisions based on your individual style, personality and preferences
The years of experience of a qualified professional can’t be underestimated
Whether it’s being able to get your baby into a deep enough sleep so that they can be safely posed or, with the utmost care, posing them beautifully without waking them – this is where the years of experience of a seasoned professional come into their own.
It’s not about the camera – it’s about the light
Kath is a qualified member of the Master Photographers Association and as such is an expert at painting with light. She bathes her subjects in soft, warm, flattering light, creating images that tell a story through the shadows as much as the highlights.
This technique will bring out the best in you and your little one, and is fundamental in the creation of her elegant maternity images.
When you leave our studio, our work is just beginning
Your baby may have flakey skin, milk spots, or appear a little jaundiced. That’s fine, as it’s all part of being a newborn baby. We will check with you about your preferences before we set to work on perfecting your finished artwork.
Images will be painstakingly retouched, before you see them. We balance colours and contrast, blemishes and dry skin are gently softened and years of training will be brought to bear to make your images as stunning as they can be.
It’s actually a pleasant experience – honest!
A portrait session is a chance to step away from the daily grind and focus only on you and/or your baby for a few hours. The sprinkling of glamour from a maternity session adds some sparkle to the last month of your pregnancy. A newborn session allows you the opportunity, during those sleep-deprived first days, to curl up under a cosy blanket and get some much-needed rest while Kath creates your newborn artwork for you.
If you don’t organise this in advance, you’ll probably miss the (very short) window of opportunity
A newborn session is a commitment on our part too. Kath doesn’t book anything else on the day of a newborn session. That day is all about you and your baby. You have the studio and Kath for the full day if needs be.
She also wants to give the best of herself to each and every client, so she only has four portrait sessions available per week. If you don’t book one in advance, you will probably miss the opportunity to create those images that will make you, your family and friends go “ahhhhh” for years to come.
a money-back guarantee means you really have nothing to lose
Professional photographers are so confident in their ability to create for you the portraiture that you want, that they’ll guarantee you’re absolutely delighted with the end result, or your money back.
So here’s what you’re paying for and what you can expect from a qualified professional photographer
- Reliability – guaranteed high quality results – no excuses
- A safe, experienced pair of hands
- Technical excellence
- Artistry
- World-class image editing
- A wonderful experience
- Risk-free, money-back guarantee

Excellent blog! Do you have any recommendations for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like
Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there
that I’m completely confused .. Any ideas?
Thanks a lot!
Hi Nunzio, welcome to my blog and thank you for your kind words!
You can setup a free website within a few minutes at http://www.WordPress.com; it’s an excellent platform to start writing your blogs and building an audience. Good luck and please let me know when you are setup so I can visit your site.

These are some great reasons to hire a professional photographer, I have had one take pictures of my family a few times, and I have never regretted it. Some of the only pictures that are worth keeping around, and framing have come from them. The biggest reason for me is that a professional will have equipment that I would never buy those expensive cameras making the hiring cost worth it.
Hi Cam, I agree with you that the expense of the cameras makes hiring a photographer worth it. Retail cameras are becoming more advanced with every new release although they are still short of the capabilities of a professional camera. The difference in large print photo quality is tremendous. This is what a professional photographer has to offer; along with digital editing, photo printing, bespoke frame design and a wonderful experience for the whole family.
Thank you for your comments – I really enjoyed viewing your website and your amazing photo galleries. Do you mostly shoot your photography sessions on site or in a studio?
