Many of the most heart-breakingly cute portraits of newborn babies aren’t actually one image, but a composite of two or more images. This is done so that during the creation of these images your baby is never placed at risk.
Although it may look as if they’re self-supporting the head, they’re not. Even knowing how to do this isn’t all of it, though. Every baby is different, and not every baby is comfortable in this position.
Trained newborn photographers know how to pose Baby safely in ways that aren’t visible in the final portrait. They also have the experience to work within the comfortable limits of each individual baby, and will never force a pose. Lastly, they then have the technical ability to combine these images into a fantastic end result. But you’d never be able to tell, would you? So please don’t try this at home, folks! It’s really not worth the risk.
